IV. Vaccine Research and Preparedness

The Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center is working closely with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Yunnan Bureau of Health on its primary mission of HIV vaccine development.  ADARC has designed a vaccine that targets the HIV-1 strain prevalent in Yunnan. Following FDA approval, Phase I clinical trials were successfully conducted in New York. With the vaccine now approaching Phase II in the developmental pipeline, ADARC is strengthening the capacity of its Chinese collaborators in anticipation of testing and production there.  Recently, ADARC and CAMS received funding from the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology to prepare the production of candidate vaccines for clinical trials in China.

As one of the lead partners for the IAVI’s China programs, ADARC partnered with CAMS and the Yunnan CDC to cosponsor the first Vaccine Preparedness Workshop. Government and community leaders from Dehong County (the likely site for eventual vaccine trials) were introduced to basic concepts of Institutional Review Boards, Community Advisory Boards, and other prerequisites for future vaccine trials in Yunnan.
