The China AIDS Initiative (CAI)

The China AIDS Initiative, created in November 2003, is an Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center-led alliance dedicated to helping China accelerate its response to HIV/AIDS.

CAI coordinates the capacity, resources, and expertise of its partner organisations, including:

Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center;
Yale-China Association;
China AIDS Media Project;
Harvard University;
The Chinese Ministry of Health;
Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences;
Tsinghua University;
Wuhan University;
Bureaus of Health of Yunnan, Hubei and Henan;
Chi Heng Foundation;
Sterling Foundation; and
Hong Kong AIDS Foundation.

Under Dr. David HoÕs direction, CAI draws on the partnersÕ core competencies to design programmes responsive to ChinaÕs needs in four primary areas: Advocacy, Medical Training, Clinical Research and Vaccine Production and Preparedness.

CAI is funded by a small but generous group of individuals and institutions in the U.S. and Asia, and through in-kind contributions from its partner.  Funding has been particularly forthcoming from Hong Kong, where an enthusiastic committee has secured substantial support for CAI from local benefactors.
